    'Commemorating a Disputed Past: Football Club and Supporters' Group War Memorials in the Former Yugoslavia

    This article documents the existence of numerous football-related war memorials throughout the former Yugoslavia. Utilizing photographic evidence of these monuments, plaques and other methods of memorialization, it illuminates the ways in which those involved in the game have written the deeds of their fallen members into the historical record, often harnessing these sacrifices in the service of a variety of political causes in the process. These commemorative gestures include socialist patriotic memorials erected in the aftermath of the Second World War Partisan victory, as well as monuments and murals created in honour of football supporters who went into battle as paramilitaries and members of incipient national armies during the dissolution wars of the 1990s. It is argued that the deeds of the fallen have been elevated, and at times manipulated, while the creativity of the latest wave of football remembrance is arguably heavily influenced by the traditional epic poetry and mythologized histories of the region. The fact that these disparate memorials have survived from various historical periods means that the region's built environment offers problematic and conflicting accounts of Yugoslav football's violent past. Memorials which honour impossibly pure socialist heroes coexist awkwardly alongside those dedicated to supporters who gave their lives in pursuit of ethnically exclusive states. In the case of one desecrated monument, these distinct periods are somewhat paradoxically remembered by the same symbolic object

    When situativity meets objectivity in peer-production of knowledge:the case of the WikiRate platform

    PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to further the debate on Knowledge Artefacts (KAs), by presenting the design of WikiRate, a Collective Awareness platform whose goal is to support a wider public contributing to the generation of knowledge on environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance of companies.Design/methodology/approachThe material presented in the paper comes from the first-hand experience of the authors as part of the WikiRate design team. This material is reflexively discussed using concepts from the field of science and technology studies.FindingsUsing the concept of the “funnel of interest”, the authors discuss how the design of a KA like WikiRate relies on the designers’ capacity to translate general statements into particular design solutions. The authors also show how this funnelling helps understanding the interplay between situativity and objectivity in a KA. The authors show how WikiRate is a peer-production platform based on situativity, which requires a robust level of objectivity for producing reliable knowledge about the ESG performance of companies.Originality/valueThis paper furthers the debate on KAs. It presents a relevant design example and offers in the discussion a set of design and community building recommendations to practitioners

    How epigenetic evolution can guide genetic evolution (abstract)

    The expression level of a gene in future generations can be modified both by genetic mutations and by the attachment of methyl groups to the DNA. Since the DNA methylation pattern along a genome is inherited, methylation patterns constitute a significant epigenetic inheritance mechanism that is subject to evolution by natural selection. The variation rate of methylation patterns is generally higher than that of DNA which suggests that evolution of methylation patterns might be more rapid than that of genetic evolution. But, common consequences of methylation, such as reduced expression of methylated genes, could also be produced by genetic changes and these would have higher heritability. The question we address in this work is how the evolution of epigenetic methylation-dependent phenotypes might interact with the evolution of genetic DNA-determined phenotypes. There is no biological mechanism known to directly transfer methyl groups into equivalent DNA changes. However, in principle an indirect mechanism could cause evolved methylation patterns to enable the subsequent evolution of equivalent genetic patterns in a manner analogous to the Baldwin effect (Baldwin, Am. Nat., 30:441-451, 1896; Jablonka et al, TREE, 13:206-210, 1998). The Baldwin effect describes how non-heritable acquired characteristics can influence the evolution of equivalent genetic characteristics without any direct Lamarckian inheritance of acquired characters. This occurs because the ability to acquire or learn a new behaviour changes the selective pressures acting on genetic changes. Specifically, genetic changes that support this behaviour, e.g. by reducing learning time by making a small part of the behaviour genetically innate, may be selected for when the learning mechanism is present even though these same genetic changes may not be selected for when the learning mechanism is absent. Over generations, the modified selection pressures so produced can cause genetic assimilation of a phenotype that was previously acquired, even to the extent of making the acquisition mechanism subsequently redundant. Thus a learned behaviour can guide the evolution of an equivalent innate behaviour (Hinton & Nowlan, Complex Systems, 1: 495-502, 1987). In the Baldwin effect a rapid mechanism of lifetime adaptation guides the relatively slow genetic evolution of the same behaviour. By analogy, Jablonka et al have suggested that “genetic adaptations may be guided by heritable induced or learnt phenotypic adaptations”. Here we hypothesise that “inherited epigenetic variations may be able to ‘hold’ an adapted state for long enough to allow similar genetic variations to catch up”, as they put it, even if the epigenetic variations are not induced or learnt but simply evolved by natural selection on methylation patterns. We assume that an individual may only express one phenotype in its lifetime, but that a given genome will persist relatively unchanged on a timescale that allows its methylome to adapt by natural selection. Thus, in contrast to the Baldwin effect, in this case two mechanisms of evolution by natural selection are coupled — one acting at a different variation rate from the other. We present a simple model to illustrate how a rapidly evolving methylome can guide a slowly evolving but highly-heritable genome. This is used to show that methylome evolution can enable genetic evolution to cross fitness valleys that would otherwise require multiple genetic changes that were each selected against. This finding suggests that the relatively rapid evolution of methylation patterns can produce novel phenotypes that are subsequently genetically assimilated in DNA evolution without direct transfer or appeal to induced phenotypes. This can enable the genetic evolution of new phenotypes that would not be found by genetic evolution alone, even if methylation is not significant in the ultimate phenotype

    The impact of solar cell technology on planar solar array performance

    The results of a study into the potential impact of advanced solar cell technologies on the characteristics (weight, cost, area) of typical planar solar arrays designed for low, medium and geosynchronous altitude earth orbits are discussed. The study considered planar solar array substrate designs of lightweight, rigid-panel graphite epoxy and ultra-lightweight Kapton. The study proposed to answer the following questions: Do improved cell characteristics translate into array-level weight, size and cost improvements; What is the relative importance of cell efficiency, weight and cost with respect to array-level performance; How does mission orbital environment affect array-level performance. Comparisons were made at the array level including all mechanisms, hinges, booms, and harnesses. Array designs were sized to provide 5kW of array power (not spacecraft bus power, which is system dependent but can be scaled from given values). The study used important grass roots issues such as use of the GaAs radiation damage coefficients as determined by Anspaugh. Detailed costing was prepared, including cell and cover costs, and manufacturing attrition rates for the various cell types

    Optimisation in ‘Self-modelling’ Complex Adaptive Systems

    When a dynamical system with multiple point attractors is released from an arbitrary initial condition it will relax into a configuration that locally resolves the constraints or opposing forces between interdependent state variables. However, when there are many conflicting interdependencies between variables, finding a configuration that globally optimises these constraints by this method is unlikely, or may take many attempts. Here we show that a simple distributed mechanism can incrementally alter a dynamical system such that it finds lower energy configurations, more reliably and more quickly. Specifically, when Hebbian learning is applied to the connections of a simple dynamical system undergoing repeated relaxation, the system will develop an associative memory that amplifies a subset of its own attractor states. This modifies the dynamics of the system such that its ability to find configurations that minimise total system energy, and globally resolve conflicts between interdependent variables, is enhanced. Moreover, we show that the system is not merely ‘recalling’ low energy states that have been previously visited but ‘predicting’ their location by generalising over local attractor states that have already been visited. This ‘self-modelling’ framework, i.e. a system that augments its behaviour with an associative memory of its own attractors, helps us better-understand the conditions under which a simple locally-mediated mechanism of self-organisation can promote significantly enhanced global resolution of conflicts between the components of a complex adaptive system. We illustrate this process in random and modular network constraint problems equivalent to graph colouring and distributed task allocation problems

    “The pitch itself was no man’s land:” Siege, Željezničar Sarajevo Football Club and the Grbavica Stadium

    Inspired by microhistory, this essay explores the wartime plight of a football stadium and the multi-ethnic club that called it home as a means of understanding Bosnia and Herzegovina’s descent into conflict, the siege of Sarajevo, and the impact upon civilians. Like the suburb of the same name, Grbavica became part of the frontline during the siege. Deprived of its home, FK Željezničar continued to function, while players, staff, and supporters longed for a return to the shattered ground. At a local level, the organization offers a means of visualizing the development of the Grbavica suburb, from its socialist foundations to its post-Dayton reintegration. In this way, the life of the stadium and those who frequent it map onto the history of Yugoslavia, its dissolution, and the independent republic that emerged in its wake. Moreover, the wartime partition of the stadium, the club, and its supporters’ group – all of which were claimed by actors on both sides of the frontline – were representative of political developments in a state where the ethnic balance was forcibly reengineered. This reconstruction of Grbavica’s war harnesses original photographic evidence, oral history, maps, contemporary journalism, and the transcripts of the Hague Tribunal

    An Exception in War and Peace:Ipswich Town Football Club, c. 1907-1945

    This essay explores the development of a football club as a means of understanding its late adoption of professionalism and its unusual wartime conduct. Ipswich Town were the only Football League team not to kick a ball for the duration of the Second World War. Arguably, the underlying causes of the club’s inactivity in both global conflicts can be found in the patriotic and staunchly amateur ethos which permeated the organisation, resulting in a very late conversion to the professional game in 1936. When the Amateur Football Association (AFA) seceded from the Football Association (FA) in 1907, Town sided with the gentlemen amateurs and competed in the socially-exclusive Southern Amateur League until the season before the club adopted professionalism. The unique nature of Town’s evolution offers an opportunity to explore the decline of this branch of the game in the face of professional football, the protagonists who were caught up in it, and the relationship between football and civic pride. In wartime, the human and social continuities between the professional company and its amateur predecessor arguably proved to be more influential than the ruptures that resulted from a controversial inter-war abandonment of cherished amateur principles

    Laying the Foundations of Physical Culture: The Stadium Revolution in Socialist Yugoslavia

    After liberation, the incipient socialist Yugoslavia engaged its citizens in an indefatigable process of reconstruction. An enormous wave of volunteers threw themselves into regenerating stricken cities and shattered infrastructure. A bastion of the revolution, physical culture was no exception: interwar venues were repaired and hundreds of new ones were built. These included flagship stadiums, as well as more modest undertakings: athletics grounds on Croatian islands, mountaineering hunts in Kosovo, and Bosnian bowling alleys among them. Major projects received public funding, but others relied on self-initiative, causing friction between the authorities and zealous locals. As the ‘stadium revolution’ evolved, professional companies worked on vast football grounds. At its zenith, expensive undertakings like Split’s Poljud [built for the 1979 Mediterranean Games] were highly prestigious for the communist authorities. These venues constitute a mixed socialist legacy, but many continue to serve the needs of successor states. Using archival documents and photographs, this essay explores a stadium revolution that unfolded in parallel with the revolution at large. It examines the dynamics that shaped Yugoslav sport and society. Yugoslavia’s experience, while unique, did not occur in a vacuum; the case provides a new perspective on the development of sporting infrastructure in revolutionary environments in general
